Dog Field Etiquette β How to Be a Great Guest

The unwritten rules
Secure dog fields are relaxed, informal places β but there are a few unwritten rules that make the experience better for everyone. Most of these are common sense, but if you're new to fields, here's your guide to being the kind of visitor that field owners love.
1. Arrive on time β not early
This is the big one. If your session starts at 10:00, don't arrive at 9:45 and wait by the gate. The previous visitor might still be inside, and seeing your car or your dog outside the gate can stress their dog β especially if they're reactive.
Aim to arrive 2-3 minutes before your session. If you're early, wait in your car out of sight.
2. Leave on time
Your session has an end time. Respect it. The next visitor's dog might be in the car park waiting, and every extra minute you stay is a minute they lose.
Set a phone alarm for 5 minutes before your session ends. Start winding down, call your dog, clip the lead on, and walk to the gate.
3. Use the airlock properly
The double-gate system exists for a reason β to prevent escapes. Always close the first gate behind you before opening the second. Never hold both gates open at the same time, even if you think your dog has good recall.
4. Pick up after your dog
This should go without saying, but: pick up every poo. The next visitor's dog will be running through the same space. Bags and bins are provided β use them.
5. Check the field before you leave
A quick scan for anything you've left behind β toys, bags, wrappers. Leave the field as you found it (or better).
6. Don't bring food for yourself into the field
Other dogs that visit later may find crumbs, wrappers, or food smells that trigger resource guarding or scavenging. Eat before or after your session.
7. Report any damage
If you notice a hole in the fencing, a broken gate latch, a fallen branch, or anything that could be a safety issue β tell the field owner immediately. Don't assume someone else will.
8. Be honest about your dog
If your dog digs, tell the owner. If they're an escape artist, mention it when booking. If they've been unwell, wait until they're recovered. Honesty makes the field safer for everyone.
The golden rule
Leave the field in the condition you'd want to find it. That's it. Simple.
